Mind health

Like other mental illnesses, anxiety is a complex disorder that can stem from several causes. Some studies have shown that certain genes could be responsible for how vulnerable a person is to anxiety and why some people tend to be more anxious than others in certain situations. "It is obvious that certain circumstances that arise in life cause anxiety in an individual. And often when the situation is resolved or disappears, the anxiety also disappears" explains Dr. Macnair. However, such extreme and threatening events can occur that anxiety can continue long after the event has occurred. This is called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which often arises when an individual is exposed to a violent situation. And even when no physical injury has resulted, the person may continue to experience extreme nervousness and anxiety for months or years after the event.
