Herpes on the lips is a chronic relapsing form of herpes, which is a consequence of infection with the herpes virus in early childhood. After the primary herpetic infection suffered by the child, the herpes virus remains in the body for life, and is periodically activated, causing the formation of herpetic eruptions on the lips and skin around the mouth. The very first case of herpes always occurs in the form of herpetic gingivostomatitis. In 90% of cases, the primary case of the disease is mild and is usually mistaken by parents for teething symptoms. All repeated outbreaks of herpes most often occur on the lips, sometimes on the skin of the face and mucous membrane of the oral cavity.
